Yes, it's another electric piano, but this one is different (obvs), it sounds 'like' an electric piano, it carries the memory of electric piano-ness, but it also has its own unique sound that means it can function like an electric piano but without carrying the usual electric piano baggage. At the rougher, more 'organic' end of the electric piano spectrum, a real fully working Wurlitzer is a rare and wonderful beast. This Wurlitzer 200 is particularly special, it belongs to ex Sheryl Crowe, Oasis and current Noel G keyboard player Mikey Rowe, and it can be heard on records by all of the above. It also has the rare tremolo speed mod, so it does things that most Wurlis can only dream of. Wurlitzer Toolkit is recorded/misused in 4 different ways and then poured into 4 different instances of an expanded version of the DRIFT engine. It emanates beautiful organic textures and mellow cinematics with a subtle suggestion of a charming and melancholic nostalgia. Chaotic Wurlitzer has 3 velocity layers where every note has differently evolving wobble speed - speeding up, slowing down - whatever took my fancy at that moment. FUZZY WURLITZER Each note is recorded through the Dust Cloud Drive pedal by SzCz. This is a gorgeous and brutal custom pedal made with salvaged original parts based on an Arbiter Fuzz Face. These are a neglected set of bass and cello steel pans played with fingers and soft mallets to avoid sounding like proper steel drums (more apocalypse than calypso), the tunings are a bit iffy, but there are plenty of velocity layers per hit for a rusty hang drum like effect. A Cloud Viola happens when you ditch the conventional viola bow and look for something else to stimulate the strings. After much experimentation I discovered that a ball of course green garden string sounded 'best', but stringing a standard bow with garden twine doesn't work, you'd need an impossible 10-metre bow to play a smooth note (I know it's impossible because I tried). After many experiments a retractable dog lead came to the rescue. It can hold long lengths of twine under tension and when fixed to one end of the studio it can allow the twine to be drawn evenly over the viola string. Another week perfecting the art of dogbowing and recording hundreds and hundreds of dogbowed, accented and col legno notes it was all starting to make sense and fortunately sounding pretty good too. The final step was to push each note 100% wet through a bespoke swirly setting on my Strymon Big Sky reverb pedal, and then do the same thing all over again with different settings for 200% wetness.
